Am I Saving Enough to Retire?

One of the number one questions we receive the most often from clients and non-clients alike is, "Am I saving enough for retirement?" And it's a valid question, but it comes down to knowing two very specific pieces of information. And once we have those pieces of information, we can give a very detailed response to the question.

The two things to answer are one, when are you going to retire? Because that dictates one, how long between now and that point in time you have to prepare for retirement and two, how long you're going to be living in retirement for. I.e. if you're going to retire at the age of 70, normally we'll assume you will live 20 to 25 years after that point in time. Meaning we have to pay for living expenses for 20 to 25 years. So the number one thing to ask is one, the date you're expected to retire, and two, how much you're wanting to spend in retirement. So that's knowing what you're spending right now, what your goals are in retirement.

And from there, we can back into what's the amount of money you need at your retirement date to have a high degree of confidence that you're going to be able to to spend what you want to spend throughout the course of your retirement, be able to pay for medical expenses, and have no concerns you're going to run out of money.

So those are the two big pieces of information we need. And from there we can get a very detailed answer to the question, am I saving enough for retirement or can I retire now?
